Objectives: to provide the concepts and practical methods and procedures of drawing as both an autonomous discipline and as a basic foundation for the visual arts in general, including painting, the graphic arts, sculpture, design, architecture, digital arts, decorative arts, photography and related disciplines.
In all these domains, the practical and conceptual knowledge of drawing will help to develop the capacity of observation and invention that allows artists to extract from the organized and creative experience of seeing the essential elements for creating effective representational, imaginary, conceptual and prospective forms and images.
Drawing is an instrument of vision and imagination, and it is also a specific art form. Therefore, the course will introduce aesthetic and historical themes and subjects related to the art of drawing.
About the instructor:
Marcelo Guimarães Lima, Ph.D, M.F.A, is a visual artist, researcher, writer and teacher. He holds a PhD degree in Art History and a MFA degree in Printmaking and Painting from the Universityof New Mexico (USA). He designed and delivered courses in the History of Art, History of Photography, Islamic Art and Architecture and Studio Courses (drawing, painting, printmaking) at, among other places, the University of Illinois (EUA), Goddard College (EUA), Canadian University of Dubai (UAE), American University in Dubai (UAE), as well as in non-formal educational contexts and community based art projects with minorities in the US and in Brazil. He has had individual shows and participated in group exhibitions in the US, Brazil, France, Australia and the UAE. His works are displayed in private collections and in public institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (Sao Paulo, Brazil) , Cabinet des Estampes BN (Paris), the University of New Mexico, among others. He is the author of “ Heterochronia and Vanishing Viewpoints – Art Chronicles and Essays” (Melbourne, Metasenta Publications) and of several articles, essays and papers on contemporary art, art criticism, art history and art theory published in the US, France, Brazil and |Australia.
